Nedbank and AMD
One of South Africa’s leading financial institutions, Nedbank, through its foundation, has collaborated with AMD to enable the deployment of 50x15 Learning Labs in schools across South Africa to provide constituents with Internet access and educational, personal and professional development tools. Several learning labs in South African high schools have been funded by the Nedbank Foundation, the company’s corporate social responsibility arm.
Mission
The Nedbank Foundation’s mission is to become a key player in lifting up communities in South Africa, especially rural ones, by developing programs that are empowering and sustainable.
Vision
The Nedbank Foundation undertakes the majority of Nedbank’s corporate social investment activities in South Africa. Over the past 10 years, over R282,000,000 ($36,000,000) have been donated to hundreds of projects across South Africa.
The foundation has four main focus areas:
- Education — provide assistance to a variety of school-based educational projects, early-childhood development, rural school restoration and renovation; support for teacher-training initiatives; assistance to higher-learning institutions and any other priority areas in education;
- Community development — support for HIV/AIDS initiatives, children’s homes, hunger and disaster relief along with support for non-profit organizations that serve vulnerable groups in South Africa, support for non-profit organizations that sustain arts and culture;
- Economic development — support for a variety of skills development and enterprise development projects; and
- Staff volunteerism — create opportunities for staff members to volunteer and support various causes that they are passionate about.
Inspired by the successes of the 50x15 Initiative in Uganda as part of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) initiative, Nedbank has collaborated with AMD to emulate the NEPAD e-School Uganda 50x15 Learning Labs in the Nelson Mandela High School in Crossways Gugulethu. This learning lab served as a model for additional learning lab replications and in less than a year’s time, AMD and Nedbank have made significant progress in minimizing project costs and accelerating installation times for additional labs recently completed in the northwest province of Johannesburg.
