NEPAD e-Africa Commission
The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is a vision and strategic framework for Africa’s renewal. The NEPAD e-Africa Commission was created to promote Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development in the African continent. The commission (in consultation with African governments) has identified ICT skills development as a key priority, and has established the NEPAD e-Schools Initiative to respond to this issue.
NEPAD e-Schools Initiative
The NEPAD e-Schools Initiative aims to impart ICT skills to teachers and students in primary and secondary schools in Africa, harnessing technology to improve, enrich and expand their education and to make every learner health literate. Over a ten-year period the initiative seeks to develop all African schools (estimated to be in excess of 600,000) into NEPAD e-Schools. These schools will be provided with necessary infrastructure and ICT equipment, and will have teachers that are appropriately trained and access to appropriate applications and digital content, to ensure that ICTs play a meaningful role in enhancing education and health on the African continent.
NEPAD and AMD
As a leader of one of the five consortia spearheading the initiative, AMD has worked closely with NEPAD and other digital includsion ecosystem partners to deploy technology across the continent. In the first phase of the initiative called the NEPAD e-schools Demonstration Project, AMD and its NEPAD partners are deploying learning labs in 18 schools spanning six countries.
When this first phase is complete, the five consortia will have provided 96 African schools with Internet access and computing capabilities. Furthermore, the solutions put forth by the five consortia will form the basis of a larger process to scale and replicate the successes in a larger phase two rollout being planned by the NEPAD e-Africa commission.

NEPAD e-Schools Demonstration Project
As a first step, a NEPAD e-Schools Demonstration Project (demo) is intended to accrue a body of knowledge, based on real-life implementation experiences of ICTs in African schools across the continent that will serve to inform the model/s for post-demo rollout. The demo is being undertaken in six secondary schools in each of 17 African countries. The countries are: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo Brazaville, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda.
For the NEPAD e-Schools demo, all 96 participating schools (6 schools X 16 countries) have been allocated to 5 consortia led by:
- AMD
- Cisco
- HP
- Microsoft
- Oracle
Within the AMD consortium, there are ecosystem partners that provide the basic ICT skills training programs for all schools. Project execution will entail at least the following components: infrastructure (including computers, communications, networking, power, etc.); ICT training for teachers; content and curriculum development; efforts towards community buy-in, involvement and ownership of the process; “health point” definition issues; organization and management of the project; collaboration issues; and financial and sustainability issues.
